# Data Connectivity Modes

You can connect to a SingleStore data source using the SingleStore connector in Power BI in the following modes:

* [Import](https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/connect-data/service-dataset-modes-understand#import-mode)
* [DirectQuery](https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/connect-data/service-dataset-modes-understand#directquery-mode)

In **Import** mode, Power BI imports the data from the data source. If the data in the data source changes after the initial import or the latest refresh, you will need to refresh the data source to see the changes.

In **DirectQuery** mode, data is not imported into Power BI and you work directly with the data source. See [Use DirectQuery in Power BI Desktop](https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/connect-data/desktop-use-directquery), for more information on DirectQuery mode.

> **📝 Note**: In personal mode, the [on-premises data gateway](https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/connect-data/service-gateway-onprem) can only be used together with Import mode. For more information, see [Use personal gateways with Power BI](https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/connect-data/service-gateway-personal-mode).If you see an `Invalid credentials` error while using the on-premises data gateway in personal mode, [upgrade the SingleStore Direct Query connector](https://docs.singlestore.com/db/v9.1/query-data/connect-with-analytics-and-bi-tools/connect-with-power-bi/#section-idm323347929938178.md) to the latest version.
